A-raamatukogu

The A-library is located on the third floor of the Youth house called Lille maja (Lille street 9, Tartu). It's an alternative, independent library-infoshop, which' aims include:

Introducing alternative social, cultural and political movements, views and ideas.
Raising grassroot activism, the capability of starting things and the courage to speak out loud about social issues.
Introducing different independent democratic movements and non-governmental organisations and forwarding relevant information.
Maintaining a library that is free from fee and open for everybody.
Offering different activist groups a place to meet.
Organizing information events, movie nights, workshops, meetings, exhibitions and so on..
Creating a cozy place to meet, where interested people can hang together, talk, etc.

The A-library has no certain ideological boundaries, although the people involved have a mutual interest towards antiauthoritarian movements, alternative cultures, environmentally responsible and animal-friendly lifestyles.

We are particularly interested in the following issues (which also reverberates in the literature, events and the program we offer) : alternative cultures, anti-capitalism, anarchism, libertarian socialism, radical democracy, animal rights, vegetarianism, veganism, anti-racism, anti-authoritarian left-wing politics, feminism, streetart, art with a radical social message, environment protection, social ecology, recycling, DIY, squatting, autonomous spaces, culture jamming, human rights, rights of sexual minoroities, anti-GMO, copyleft, open source software...

We are about fifteen young people, who build, maintain and organize everything around the A-library. We have no legal form or bureaucratic structure whatsoever.

We are being helped in official stuff (for example the rent contract and bank account) by the Non-governmental organization Independent Active. Still we find it important to mention, that Independent Active NGO is no „owner“ of the A-library. Everything is being decided by the people involved - and you can be one of them!

Since A-raamatukogu is an alternative independent project wich has no support from any larger organization, foundation or institution, our budget is rather small. Mostly we have gathered money for rent, repairs and other expenses from the donations from our friends and selling selfmade T-shirts and patches. Every donation goes fully to the use of the A-raamatukogu. Every donation goes through book-keeping and the proper use of the money is later on checkable.

All the work done around the A-raamatukogu is voluntary and nobody gets paid for it.

We would also be very happy if you could send us relevant books, magazines, DVD-s, pamphlets, zines, posters, stickers etc.
